Joseph Road Precinct Urban Renewal Area

The Joseph Road Precinct comprises 17 hectares of industrial land bordered by Hopkins Street/Dynon Road, the Maribyrnong River and the Footscray Railway Line, within the Footscray Central Activities Area.

SJB Planning provided strategic and statutory planning advice to Adelaide Banner Pty Ltd and Hamton Property Group. This formed the basis for the preparation of a Structure Plan and Urban Design Framework, led by urban designers Peck von Hartle, in collaboration with the Maribyrnong City Council.

This new residential and mixed use precinct will eventually be home for approximately 4-5,000 people who will live, work and play there.

The project takes advantage of the sites proximity to central Footscray and the CBD, incorporating potential for a range of complementary retail and commercial uses that will serve the future population and fill gaps in the delivery of services to the surrounding population. The project required SJB Planning to work as part of a large project team and draw together a range of complex issues at a State, local and client level.

The strategic work undertaken by SJB Planning and Peck on Hartle was the subject of review by the former Priority Development Panel (PDP). The PDP endorsed this important work, which formed the basis of the Minister for Planning applying the Priority Development Zone provisions to the precinct and framework for the consideration of future planning permit applications.
