SJB Planning is thrilled to announce that, on 15 November 2018, the Minister for Planning the Honourable Richard Wynne approved Amendment C149 to the Port Phillip Planning Scheme enabling the use and development of the Victorian Pride Centre in Fitzroy Street, St Kilda.

The Victorian Pride Centre, the first of its kind in Australia, will be a civic and community hub for the LGBTQI community in Melbourne, Victoria and nationally.

SJB Planning worked collaboratively with the Victorian Pride Centre Board, the City of Port Phillip and a range of other stakeholders to produce a site-specific control and facilitate a planning approvals process which involved a request to the Minister for Planning to amend the Port Phillip Planning Scheme and rezone a portion of the land. The Amendment process was the subject of an extensive community consultation process, receiving high levels of support from various key stakeholders throughout the process including local community members and the City of Port Phillip, which made a significant contribution to the project.

The Victorian Pride Centre will be a mixed-use civic and community building comprised of community and commercial office space, support services for the LGBTQI community, shops, hospitality premises, a radio station, medical centre, function centre, a reading room and gallery, among other elements.

The building has been designed by Brearley Architects and Urbanists and Grant Amon Architects, two local St Kilda architecture firms who won a national Design Competition for the project which was announced by the Premier for Victoria in January 2018. The Victorian Pride Centre will be an iconic building within the Fitzroy Street streetscape and will make a positive contribution to the public realm.

SJB Planning was honoured to play a part in securing approval for this iconic community building and is excited to continue working with the Victorian Pride Centre Board and the associated consultant team to deliver this exciting project.
