25 years of Interior DesignJuly 2019
In May 1994, founding director Andrew Parr started the studio–in-a–studio with a singular vision of spatial intelligence, modern luxury and layered materiality. “Our purpose was to create moods and atmospheres within architecturally designed spaces, to make the individual feel comfortable in their environment, whether it’s an office, a hotel, restaurant, or a high-end residence,” says Andrew.
SJB founding directors Alan Synman, Charles Justin and Michael Bialek supported the move, at a time when Australia had few truly multi-disciplinary design practices. Today SJB Interiors is an international tour de force with a team of twenty-four, including three directors: Andrew Parr, Ljiljana Gazevic and Leo Terrando.
Over 25 years, SJB Interiors has set industry benchmarks with award-winning projects. Early Melbourne interiors included Arnold Bloch Leibler’s legal offices (with sandstone walls, floating staircase, reflection pond) and Grey Advertising (a moody environment playing on the company name) and in Sydney it was MG Garage in Surry Hills and Merivale’s Establishment Hotel, completed for the 2000 Olympic Games.
We continue this legacy today through lasting relationships, that help our clients take their business to the next level. Having completed L’Hôtel Gitan in 2015 for chef Jacques Reymond, we are now working with a new generation of Reymonds. After our 2004 reinvention of Melbourne’s iconic Royce Hotel, we are once again poised for the next evolution while we continue to develop new themes and environments with Adina Hotels throughout Australia and Europe and new relationships with Hyatt Hotels.
While our vision for excellence is singular, design is an ensemble production, so we humbly thank our family of clients, collaborators, suppliers and skilled craftspeople for their crucial part in this story. Together we have created some of the most creative and elegant interiors of our times.
