The client for this project approached SJB with a request to design a family home that resonated with the linear planes of Neutra’s work in Palm Springs, set in a leafy suburb of inner Melbourne. The street frontage is set back to provide a landscaped edge to the public realm, whilst providing privacy for the restrained cantilevered forms of the north facing house. The understated entry opens to flowing family living spaces and a master suite which maximise the north facing aspect of the plot.
A floating glazed pavilion at the western end offers an external living area and a close connection to the swimming pool. Beyond a crisply detailed steel car port roof, the travertine and timber clad first floor forms contain children’s and guest bedrooms. These themes are continued in SJB’s Interiors, which are designed to complement the client’s collection of mid-century furniture and lighting.
