Wilton Townhouses

Kew VIC Australia

In a leafy green inner Melbourne area characterised by Victorian and Edwardian homes, Wilton Townhouses respond directly to their surrounds. Comprising 9, mostly three bedroom townhouses, the project has allowed Kew RSL to leverage valuable land to refurbish their heritage social club.

Taking cues from the neighbouring context, spotted gum has been used extensively as fine horizontal battens that cover much of the exterior. The interiors are warm and welcoming with the slatted screens creating a striated lantern effect as natural light pours into each home. Oak has been used throughout, including floors, joinery and stairs. Stone use is abundant and impressive with rough and smooth honed granite and limestone used throughout.

The refurbishment of the social club itself is entirely sympathetic to the historic fabric. Cornices, skirting, ceiling roses and other architectural features, for example, have been restored and strengthened.

Light filled and texturally warm, the Wilton Townhouses are calm and considered. Grounded in timber and stone they are both a reflection of their neighbourhood and unique architectural response.
